Recent research with the University of Sydney Nano Institute:

The project aims to examine on use of Nano Solution containing nano silver and titanium dioxide as a sprayed coating for disinfections. The solution was characterised using Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) imaging and Single Particle Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (SP-ICP-MS). AFM imaging showed uniform coating when the solution was sprayed for 5-seconds or 10-seconds on different substrates and agglomeration of the particles. The coating also remained on the surface after washing with sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) surfactant and after sonication. Particle dislodgement from substrates was quantified using SP-ICP-MS. Titanium nanoparticles dislodgement was observed from sonicated substrate incubated in water for 1 hour. Subsequent sonication and further incubation time did not dislodge more particles. Analysis of Nano Solution using SP-ICP-MS showed different dissolved ions and particle concentrations between old and new Nano Solutions. New Nano Solution contains lower dissolved ion concentrations and higher particle concentrations in comparison to the old Nano Solution. The toxicity of Nano Solution was investigated on human lung cells (BEAS-2B) and fibroblasts and occurred in a dose-dependent manner. Reduced cell viability was observed at higher concentrations when particle agglomeration and sedimentation was evident. The toxicity of Nano Solution as a coating on acrylic substrate was also investigated on BEAS-2B. BEAS-2B preferentially attach to cell culture plate (polystyrene) over uncoated acrylic. Coating the acrylic with Nano Solution increases cell adherence to the acrylic but also resulted in cellular morphology changes.
